Signs of Diabetes

There are several signs of diabetes that we must be aware of. Diabetes makes a huge impact to the lives of individuals afflicted with this disease in many ways. Not all individuals experience the same signs of diabetes. There has been numerous published research and studies that list several of these signs of diabetes which are helpful in determining whether one is already afflicted with this disease.

There are several signs of diabetes that are red flags that you already have a diabetes condition. The following is a list of the most common signs of diabetes experienced by the individual who have diabetes.

1. Unquenchable and excessive thirst. One of the indications that someone has diabetes is unexplained thirst. If you drink too much water and still quench for more as if you have never drank something, then you should consult your doctor to determine if it’s diabetes that’s causing it.

2. Frequent visits to the restroom. Constant trip to the bathroom to urinate is one of the most common signs of diabetes. For diabetic patients, it is always a challenge for them driving for miles without getting a restroom break. They also wake up in the middle of the night because their bladder is so full that they need to go to the restroom to urinate. If your bladder is causing you these problems, it is best to go to your doctor and consult what’s causing this frequent visit to the restroom.

3. Losing weight even though you have increased appetite for food. The cells are not able to convert glucose from the intake of food and are started. So for this reason, the body fat and muscle tissue are converted into energy by the body. When no matter how much you eat, you still lose weight, it should be very concerning because the unused glucose stays in the blood and poses health risks for the individual. High glucose levels in the blood lead to ketoacidosis and diabetic coma.

4.  If you loose weight without even trying, you should consult your physician at once to understand what’s causing this.

You should be aware of what’s going on with your body by being informed about the signs of diabetes. Being on the look-out for these signs of diabetes could save your life because early detection of this disease would somehow slow down the disease progression by performing the necessary interventions.

Ignoring simple signs of diabetes such as frequent urination and thirst could be really fatal. This happened personally to me when one day I discovered my daughter in a diabetic coma, with her glucose spiraling to a level of about 1,482 mg/dL. We were not aware that her frequent thirst and urination has an underlying serious medical condition. She was diagnosed to  have ketoacidosis. Fortunately, she woke up from that coma. I realized that we should have not ignored the indications of frequent urination and thirst she exhibited for the past months. Due to diabetes, she lost a great deal of weight that has consequently made her look small for her age.

However, it really doesn’t mean that you already have diabetes when you are experiencing these signs and symptoms. It is always best to consult your doctor if you believe you are exhibiting signs of diabetes since they are the only one who could confirm if your suspicions are right.
